THE GREAT LAKES REGION -RWANDA
Rwanda is mainly known in the international arena for the 1994 Genocide that claimed the lives of more than one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The history of Rwanda is complex. It is a tiny country with only three Ethnic tribes: the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. All tribes speak the same language, Kinyarwanda.
The current President His Excellency Paul Kagame, an Anglophone was trained in Uganda where he was exiled in the late 50’s when he was very young. People say he started his life as a refugee in Uganda at 2 years of age.

Being a French colony has complicated issues with the current government, whose majority are Anglophone, and bent towards adopting English as the primary language because the President doesn’t speak French well. The recent closure of the French Embassy in Rwanda worsened the situation. In retaliation, the French government is attempting to reorganize the perpetrators of the 1994 genocide, who are roaming in the jungles of Congo, to cause further mayhem.

Despite these problems, the current President has strategically joined the East African community and is in the process of being accepted in the common wealth countries. This will give him a strong voice to help resolve the French / FDRL strategy of reoccupying Rwanda forcefully.
In his strategy, he has indirectly positioned Laurent Nkunda in Eastern DRC to occupy areas formerly used as FDRL bases. This strategy seems to be working well for him, creating more or less a buffer zone along the Rwanda-Congo border to make sure that negative forces do not enter Rwanda again and destabilize it.

Since 2000, Rwanda has enjoyed stability and economic growth. Tourism is the main foreign exchange earner, beating coffee and tea, the traditional foreign exchange earners. The government of Rwanda has made great effort to promote tourism by creating a first class infrastructure in all tourist destinations. Recently, they paved the road from Ruhengeri to Kiningi, home of the endangered Mountain gorillas. This is now the only country in the region where you can now get to the National park with ease.

Unlike other African countries, President Kagame has spearheaded a ZERO tolerance campaign towards corruption and has initiated many projects in the country without necessarily depending on donor support. Rwanda's police forces are also the most disciplined in Africa, if not the world.

Rwanda is positioning it self as the center of Excellency in the region, and one should not miss a visit here.

Some of the highlights we organize in Rwanda are:
